As part of the World Environment Day Weekly Observance 2025, the NSS Unit 240 of Assabah Arts & Science College successfully implemented a community-oriented vegetable garden project on June 11, 2025. The initiative, titled “TURN KITCHEN WASTE INTO GOLD,” focused on promoting sustainable agriculture by turning everyday household kitchen waste into productive compost for growing banana plants.
To raise awareness on sustainable waste management practices.To promote organic farming and self-reliant food production. To encourage community participation in environmental conservation. To guide households in converting biodegradable waste into valuable manure through banana pit farming.
The vegetable garden project emphasized banana pit cultivation, a method where kitchen waste is buried in soil pits to enrich it and support the growth of banana plants. NSS volunteers identified and collaborated with local households to set up mini home gardens using this method.
The program was launched in nearby homes of the college community, particularly focusing on Soil Preparation Training was given on how to dig and prepare pits for composting kitchen waste. Seedling/Plant Selection Banana plant varieties suitable for the local soil and climate were distributed. Organic Farming Techniques Volunteers explained the advantages of avoiding chemical fertilizers and shared tips on maintaining banana plants organically.
Over 20 households adopted banana pit farming as a result of the project. Community members reported increased interest in organic cultivation and waste recycling. The program contributed to the goal of chemical-free, home-grown food and strengthened the spirit of environmental responsibility. Volunteers gained hands-on experience in community development and eco-friendly practices.
Residents appreciated the initiative and expressed a willingness to expand similar home-based gardening projects in the future. Many noted how simple practices can significantly contribute to both waste reduction and food security.
The “TURN KITCHEN WASTE INTO GOLD” project by NSS Unit 240 successfully demonstrated how environmental protection and sustainable agriculture can begin right from home. The initiative not only served the purpose of ecological awareness but also empowered the local community to take a step toward green living and self-sustenance.
