SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS CLASS

In connection with World Suicide Prevention Day, the NSS Unit of Assabah Arts and Science College, Valayamkulam, organized an awareness class titled “A Shoulder to Lean On.” The session aimed to create awareness among students about the growing issue of suicide, its causes, and the importance of mental health support systems in preventing such tragedies. The programme was inaugurated by the Principal, Mr. Muhammad Koya A.M., who highlighted the need for open discussions on mental health and the role of educational institutions in promoting emotional well-being among students. NSS Programme Officer, Mr. Abdul Rahman P, presided over the session, emphasizing the importance of awareness and empathy in identifying individuals at risk. The main session was led by Mr. Jawahir V.P, an experienced Clinical Psychologist who has worked at Enapuzha Medical College. In his address, he elaborated on the background and reasons for the rising suicide rates in society, with a focus on students and young adults. He discussed the psychological, social, and academic pressures contributing to suicidal tendencies and suggested preventive strategies such as emotional communication, counseling support, and peer engagement. The speaker stressed the importance of identifying warning signs early and extending emotional support to those struggling with stress or depression. He also highlighted the crucial role teachers and student volunteers can play in spreading mental health awareness and providing psychological first aid. The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by NSS Convener, Mr. Naheem Ihsanulhaq, who appreciated the participants and the resource person for their valuable contributions.
